Planned Closure of Eureka Postal Processing Center

Statement

Date: Oct. 4, 2014
Issues: Infrastructure

I very much object to the proposed closure of the Eureka's Postal Processing Center. Having 6 years of experience with the Post Office (I was postmaster of Laytonville, CA), I know from experience that postal officials can indeed be willing to listen and make policy changes. In recent days I have been seeking out postal officials to help them to have a truer understanding of the implications of the proposed closure.

I know that the purpose of the post office is to provide excellent service. And, regardless of the forces behind the closure, the primary goal of the Post Office should be to continue the highest degree of service excellence. Having all mail from Leggett to Crescent City go through Medford can be nothing but a service catastrophe. Our area needs our processing facility. Otherwise, mail delay is guaranteed. It is hard to imagine how the Postal Service can feel that regular service can be maintained when the proposed processing center is on the other side of a mountain range. And, what satisfactory alternative route can be used in the event of a road closure?

I am not convinced that there will be significant cost savings (if any) with the proposed change. At any rate, it can not be worth the subtraction of jobs, service, dependability, and the reputation of the Post Office.

As your Congressman, I will continue to seek a resolution to this dilemma by working with and developing constructive communication with all interested parties.
